In November 2007, the French Family of Companies celebrated our 100th Anniversary. That is an accomplishment
for any business, but for us, it is especially important because we have remained family owned. This is significant
because it means that we have stayed true to the principles the business was founded on principles established in
1907 when Chester T. French saw the need for caring services for families experiencing the death of a loved one and
opened his first funeral home on the corner of Central and 5th Street in Albuquerque.
As time passed, Mr. French saw the need for a cemetery for the community. In 1929 after a trip to California where
he first encountered the park like atmosphere of a cemetery he brought the concept back to New Mexico and
founded Sunset Memorial Park. His goal was to provide an endowed-care cemetery in a park like atmosphere to
Albuquerque as a perfect tribute to those we love. Over 60 years after the first burial, Sunset is one of the most
highly endowed cemeteries in the southwest, with over six million dollars in an endowment trust.
Since that time, the business has grown mortuary locations have been added, a monument company, Albuquerque
Monument & Engraving was opened providing Sunset Memorial Park with the highest quality memorials in the
state. And most recently, Best Friends Pet Cremation Service was added to the family opened and operated business
to care for families losing a beloved pet. Through the years as the company has grown from its humble beginnings
the people of the French Family of Companies have continued to provide the highest level of service to those in
need after the model Mr. French exemplified.
Today, The French Family of Companies is locally owned and operated by Chairman Chester French Stewart,
grandson of Mr. French; President and CEO D.F. "Duffy" Swan; Vice President Bob H. Stewart, grandson of Mr.
French; and General Manager Karl Saltzman. Sunset Memorial Park is operated by General Manager, Chris Keller
and governed by its Board of Directors - Duffy Swan, Chester F. Stewart, Bob H. Stewart, Paul F. Layer, Jr., Charles
B. Batsel, James T. Roach, Laree E. Perez and Robert L. Bovinette.
